How to Be More Promotable and Marketable

TRANSCRIPT

For those of you who might be a bit familiar with my story, you may know that I was a Head of Leadership Development at divisions of the Walt Disney Company, Allianz, and PepsiCo.

And so one of the questions that I get asked the most often is just, “How can I be more promotable or marketable or just be more likely to get my dream job?”

And so what I always tell them is there’s obviously many factors that go into somebody getting a particular role.  It goes beyond just whatever your experience and skill sets are, and luck and timing.

Some of it may just have to do with how you might fit with the rest of the team, or how you fit in with the corporate culture, or how they see your ultimate promotability beyond that particular role they might be hiring you for.

So there’s a lot of different variables there, and you shouldn’t always get discouraged if you don’t particularly get one job that you’re applying for or are interested in.

FIND WORK YOU LOVE

Get world-class training to unleash your talents and do your most inspired work.

But what I can tell you with certainty is that one thing that you should always invest more of your time and energy in, that’s going to help you with whatever career or industry you’re in, is just your understanding of how business really operates.

Different business models, understanding annual reports.  Understanding financial statements. Understanding how profit and loss is really calculated.  How companies really make money, and how is it that they operate within a particular industry.

Maybe what different regulations are for that particular type of company or that particular type of industry.

Really looking at strategic plans and annual operating plans if you have access to them.

And again, if you’re interviewing for a job, doing as much research in advance about that.

But just knowing how business operates in general, whether or not you’re going to apply for a job internally with a company, or externally with another company, or maybe even start your own business.

Understanding how business really operates will serve you well and accelerate your long-term success.
