How to Deal With Regrets

TRANSCRIPT

If you’re having regrets about something, you’re not alone. It’s not uncommon to have at least a few regrets about things in your life.

Whether it’s something you said or did, or something you didn’t do or didn’t say.

Maybe it’s the relationships you chose or how you’ve chosen to spend your money, or how you’ve chosen to head forward with your work life.

But the question is, what do you do with some of those regrets?

Now, there’s a lot of advice and strategies out there.

But I want to just break it down to you in simple terms, and just say that in general, when you have a regret, first of all, you should just ask the basic question, “Is there something that I want to do about that regret right now to go fix it if I can?”

So, if there is a relationship that you want to repair or again, a bad financial decision that you want to try to unwind, that, if it makes sense to try to go do that, to fix it, and that would make you happy, then you should, by all means, invest in doing that.

But the flip side is, if it’s not really fixable, if it’s kind of a done deal and the train’s left the station, so to speak, and you really can’t change the outcome or what’s happened, then, what I highly recommend that you do is see it as incredibly powerful fuel and motivation for making different choices going forward.

You know, our world is filled with examples of highly successful people that because of something that happened earlier on in their life, with a bad choice that they made, that wound up being a real turning point in how they chose to live their life differently.

They learned from their mistakes, and they made different choices going forward as a result because it brought so much pain, and they had so much regret about those choices from an earlier time, that they used it wisely and it propelled them forward.

So if you’re having regret about something, just again, basically ask yourself, “Can I fix it? And should I fix it if I can, if it’ll make me feel better?”

If I can’t, “What’s the best leverage I can get out of this?

How can I learn to do differently, so that I make the most of this experience?”
